i was actually thinking about writing about house’s roots in black club culture, and how deeply it’s seeped into the fabric of 21st century western pop. this is a lovely article🙏🏾
nah i love substack for that fact, connecting with others from across the globe i feel you 😭💚 some of my favs are Kid Fonque (his whole label actually, Stay True Sounds and the artist his got signed) Wapo Jije, Jullian Gomes, Atjazz, Nutty Nys, Thabo Tonic, China Chameleon to name a few
I’m 29 so forgive me but is that “table top” line from a Kilo song? 😭 because I can’t recall but I’m so glad the article caught your attention lol 🙏🏾❤️ Thank you for reading!
And I KNEW that was the song you were talking about 🤣 It only made sense! I looked at the lyrics and every thang lol
You’re aren’t old either, you’re wise 🙏🏾 When I hear house, I hear that old Atlanta, Florida booty music. That was our alternative in AL/GA. And yes to the sampling! We still doing it to this day.
🔥
Thanks for this—it is heartening to see this heritage being passed down in writing; it's super important. I think part of the issue of authorship has to do with what is concerned worthy music by the music journalists and critics. Those bereft of rhythm and kinetic energy have been minimizing it's aesthetic value for years—not surprising. I wrote about it a few months ago in a piece title "Can Dance Music Be Considered Art?": https://open.substack.com/pub/thesignifyingreview/p/can-dance-records-be-considered-art?r=5bst13&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
I look forward to engaging with your work more in the future.
Grateful for your engagement! I’m going to read your work now.
